Day 10 - Gaudi Day

Antonio Gaudi for those who don't know, is a famous architect, with most of his works being in Barcelona. We are booked into see 3 of his projects. The Sagrada Família is first. This was mentioned a few days ago as we went and saw it on our bike tour. It's going to be the tallest building in Barcelona and the biggest Cathedral in the world. Gaudi died in 1926, and therefore didn't get to see most of the cathedral as it is today - it's not due for completion until 2033 we leant today. Gaudi's idea was to tell the story of the Bible on the outside of the church, in pictorial form. It's an amazing structure - photos don't do it justice - the light inside from the stained glass and the size of it! Here are a few pics anyway.

There are a going to be 3 sides to the church - the side that you currently enter on is the nativity side (we also went up a nativity tower)

On the other side is the passion side - this is about Jesus'death and it is starkly different.

The other side is yet to be built, but will be the main entrance to the cathedral when it is complete.

Some finer details could be seen from up in the tower.

Next we walk to Park Guell - a park designed by Gaudi.

Then down a street past another 2 of his buildings. Casa Vicens

And onto Casa Batllo - where we had booked a tour. What amazing craftmanship! This was designed as an apartment block. Ade pointed out how much Gaudi's work is Tolkien like (Lord of the Rings).

I found this McDonald's across the road from Casa Batllo and thought it was funny - Casa Maccas.

After that long day and about 8km (27,000 steps) of walking we needed sustenance!

A light 9pm tea - shared paella and a drink before an earlish night. I'm exhausted 😂

We leave Barcelona tomorrow and head west - into the wine country - Rioja - in a hire car 🙈
