Day 15 - San Sebastian

Another day in San Sebastian today. We slept in and didn't leave the accommodation until about 10. As we are in Basque country we need to try a bit of burnt Basque cheesecake before we leave tomorrow morning, and as we have bookings for lunch and dinner, it looks like it has to be cheesecake for breakfast 😂. We got there just after opening at 10.30 and there were lots of people eating cheesecake for breaky! We passed this artwork of an Abuela (Grandma) on the way.

When people were getting their cheesecake theyhad 2 slices on their plate, most couples are eating this. Ade wants his own slice, so I figure I'll ask for 2, just like all the other people have on their plates - but no, I get 2 plates with 2 big pieces on each! It's very nice cheesecake, light and the burnt bits add a nice bit of bitterness.

Luckily we have booked the bikes again for this afternoon, so we can work some of that cheesecake off! We took an amble through a food market and along the beach, it appears that's what the locals do, and we had a slt in the sun for a while.

At 1 pm picked up the e bikes to ride to the Petritgeti Cider Brewery for lunch.

It had all you can drink Cider, either from the bottle or straight from the barrel. When pouring from the bottle, you must pour it from about a 30cm height - to 'break' the Cider, and you should only ever pour about a 2 finger width amount at a time, otherwise the 'mother' settles out of the Cider. The bottles have a special cork, with a cut out that enables the pouring. The Cider out of the bottle actually tasted a lot like my home brew Kombucha.

Then if you wanted it out of the barrel, that was another experience. They had 30 to 40 x 14,000 litre barrels and you had to work your way around the barrels to find the lady who kept moving around to different ones. Then you had to catch your Cider as it squirted out under high pressure. Everytime you'd go back, you'd get to try a different batch.

Oh yeah, and we had lunch there too - it was okay!

We rode back to the bike hire place by 5pm and headed home for a few hours rest.

Ade went for his swim and we watched the sunset before heading out for an 8.30pm tea. We shared some seasonal mushrooms with scrambled eggs (they were very tasty), Ade had monk fish and I had a prawn salad.

This was the line up for our morning cheesecake shop on the way home tonight at 10.30. And the river at very low tide.

That's the end of Spain, we head north over the border into France tomorrow morning.
