Day 5 - Ypres day

Firstly, I'll apologise for all the ads that appeared in yesterday's blog, I've now paid a $4 subscription, which should fix the ads 😂

There's not too much to report today. We had a quick look at the market that had set up in the town Square. It looked to be frequented by lots of locals and contained all sorts of stalls - food, flowers, fruit and veg, material, clothes... and a cheese van!

And the locals were lining up for bags of 10 of these 'eierkoeken', so I had to try one. They were basically thin bits of sponge. It was as if you'd cut the nice caramelised top off the sponge, and just ate that. I'm not sure what he locals do with 10 at a time?

We then headed into Flanders Field Museum and up the 231 step winding stair case - you remember the one Roddy - to the top of the Belfrey Tower. There are great views of the country side, it gave me an understanding of where we had been riding! I even managed to catch the bells - they were very loud 😂

We spent an hour or so, going through the museum. It's was very tiring - physically and emotionally. It was then off to Saint Martin's Church. The stained glass windows were amazing, I can never capture them in a photo. Whilst most of the buildings look old, there really wasn't anything left of the town after Ww1, so everything had to be rebuilt.

After all of the mornings activities, we'd earned an icecream.

We went home for lunch and a bit of a rest before finding some beer! The Kazematten brewery is built into the old ramparts (underground bunkers).

After tea - Ade had moules frites (mussels and chips) and I had some Flemish stew, we went to watch the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Unfortunately the Gate is shrouded at the moment as it's undergoing a major refurbishment, but we discovered the Grenadier Guards Band (the King's band) were in town for tonight's ceremony.
