Day 7 - Belgium to Spain

Today was mostly a travel day - from Ypres to Brussels via train and then a flight to Barcelona.

We were 'accidently' sitting in first class with 2nd class tickets when the train inspectors came - Oops - don't worry they said, don't move, just get in the correct carriage next time! The Belgians have been super friendly, very approachable and more than happy to have a chat.

We left Ypres at 10 and were planning on spending a few hours in Brussels before our 6pm flight. We've spent a few days in Brussels previously. We had to swap trains in Ghent, and decided on the spur of the moment, to spend our spare time there instead. Hayley and Matt were there only 4 weeks ago - so we gave them a quick call and asked for some tips. They provided us with a written 40 minute tour - talk about service!

We locked our luggage in a locker, jumped on a tram and headed for the city centre. Ghent is another beautiful old medieval city, with a couple of churches dating way back to the 600s and a castle in the middle of the city - where Hayley tells me that witches were imprisoned and/or murdered. And it's another town built on canals.

We had another great lunch - we went Italian style - I had a lovely Italian Soave wine and Ade a local beer that we discovered was made with Australian hops. He took one taste and said that's the first beer I've had while we've been away that tastes like an Aussie craft beer.

We had about 3 hrs in town before we needed to catch the train to Brussels. We flew Vueliner to Barcelona - it looked like a cheap Jetstar 😂, but got us there in 2 hrs and on time!

We didn't get into the city until about 10.30. We are staying just off (about 10m) La Rambla - the walking avenue. There were people everywhere and the temp was about 25 degrees.

We checked into our accommodation and headed out for a very late dinner - a bit of tapas and a very refreshing Mojito at 11pm.

Home to do this and lights out at 12.45am. I think we'll be having a sleep in tomorrow.
